Kyphoplasty / Vertebroplasty

Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty, or vertebral augmentation, are minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatments for those suffering from spinal compression fractures.

Symptoms of spinal compression fractures include:

At Vista, we offer experienced and precise kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty procedures, helping you find the right treatment for your pain, and allowing you to return to you normal daily activities.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

Both kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are outpatient procedures typically performed in our angiography suite. Using moderate sedation or general anesthesia, a small incision is made in your back, and a metal tube is inserted into the fractured vertebra under real-time imaging guidance.

For kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inflated to create a small cavity and, in some cases, restore vertebral height. Once the balloon is removed, surgical cement is injected into the cavity to stabilize the fracture. In vertebroplasty, the balloon step is skipped, and cement is directly injected into the fracture, immediately stabilizing the bone. Studies and trials have shown that both procedures are effective at reducing pain and helping patients regain their mobility.

Who Should Get Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty?

Both procedures are ideal for individuals experiencing pain due to a spinal compression fracture. A diagnostic MRI may reveal acute fractures or edema, although it’s not always necessary.

During a consultation, our board-certified Interventional Radiologists will evaluate your condition and determine which treatment option is right for you.

Recovery Timeline Following the Procedure

Most patients experience a quick recovery, often able to return home the same day. A small bandage is placed over the incision, and most can resume regular activities, including physical therapy, within a day.

Pain relief is usually noticeable within 1-2 weeks, with many patients feeling improvements as soon as a few days after the procedure.
