Varicoceles Treatment

A varicocele is an enlarged cluster of veins in the scrotum, typically affecting men between the ages of 15 and 40. It occurs when the valves in the gonadal vein malfunction, causing blood to flow backward and pool in the veins of the scrotum (the pampiniform plexus).

Although varicoceles are more commonly found on the left side, they can affect one or both testicles, with symptoms including:

At Vista, we’re here to guide patients to the ideal treatment for varicoceles, including varicocele embolization

Varicocele Embolization

Historically, those suffering for varicoceles required surgery, which meant being put under general anesthesia while a surgeon performed an hours-long procedure in which an incision was made in the scrotum and the problematic vein was tied off to reduce the flow of blood.

While surgery may be an option for some, a modern treatment known as Percutaneous Gonadal Vein Embolization – a minimally invasive procedure performed by an experienced Interventional Radiologist – can be the better choice.

The Procedure

During this outpatient procedure, which typically lasts no more than 90 minutes, the radiologist accesses the vein through a small incision in the neck or groin. Using catheters and real-time imaging, the radiologist deploys an embolic agent, such as coils, plugs, or foam, to block the affected vein and stop the backward flow of blood.

The Recovery Timeline

Recovery from gonadal vein embolization is generally quick, with most patients able to return to their normal activities within an hour. Discomfort is typically minimal, and over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient for the first few days following the procedure.

Full symptom relief often comes within a few weeks to two months as the body adjusts.
