Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization
Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat symptomatic hemorrhoids, particularly in cases where other treatments have failed or when surgery is not ideal. Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectum or anus, causing pain, itching, bleeding, and discomfort.

At Vista, we offer experienced treatment to relieve pain caused by chronic hemorrhoids.
What Is Involved with HAE Treatment?
Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization involves blocking the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, which reduces their size and alleviates symptoms. It is performed by an Interventional Radiologist using a catheter and fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance.
Some patients may experience hemorrhoid related symptoms and bleeding that persists even after surgical treatment or after endoscopy with band ligation. Our Interventional Radiologists may be able to create a treatment plan for you with HAE.
The Treatment Process
- Pre-procedure: The patient is given a local anesthetic and mild sedation, and the procedure is usually done in an outpatient setting.
- Catheter Insertion: A small catheter is inserted through the skin, often near the groin, and guided to the arteries supplying blood to the hemorrhoids.
- Embolization: Tiny particles or agents are injected through the catheter into the hemorrhoid arteries to block the blood flow.
- Post-procedure: The patient may experience minimal recovery time, and the procedure is relatively low-risk compared to traditional surgery.
What Relief Can Be Expected?
HAE offers significant relief from symptoms of hemorrhoids, including:
- Pain: By cutting off the blood supply, the hemorrhoids shrink, leading to reduced pain and pressure.
- Bleeding: The procedure helps reduce or stop the bleeding that often accompanies hemorrhoids.
- Itching and Discomfort: As the hemorrhoids shrink and heal, symptoms like itching and discomfort typically improve.
HAE is less invasive than traditional surgery, with a quicker recovery time and lower complication risks. However, it may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those with very large or prolapsed hemorrhoids.
