Adenomyosis Treatment

Adenomyosis treatment focuses on reducing symptoms caused by the growth of endometrial tissue within the uterine wall. Minimally invasive options, such as uterine artery embolization (UAE), are commonly used to shrink the tissue and alleviate symptoms such as:

In this procedure, small particles are injected into the blood vessels supplying the uterus, reducing blood flow to the abnormal tissue. This helps relieve pain and heavy bleeding while preserving the uterus.

Treatment options are personalized based on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s overall health and goals. At Vista, we can help you find the right option for your needs.

What Is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the uterus (the endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium). This abnormal growth can cause the uterus to become enlarged and lead to symptoms like heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, severe pelvic pain, cramping, and painful intercourse.

Adenomyosis can also contribute to infertility or difficulty in getting pregnant for some women. The exact cause of adenomyosis is not fully understood, but it is most commonly seen in women in their 30s and 40s, particularly those who have had children. Some research suggests that prior surgery, inflammation, or hormones may contribute to adenomyosis. It can often be diagnosed through imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI and treated with medications or minimally invasive procedures like UAE.

What Does the Treatment Entail?

UAE is typically performed under sedation, and the procedure takes about one hour. It’s an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day after a brief recovery period.

During the procedure, an Interventional Radiologist makes a small puncture, usually in the groin or wrist, to access the blood vessels. Using real-time imaging guidance, a catheter is threaded through the blood vessels to the uterine arteries. Tiny embolic particles are then injected into the arteries that supply the uterus, blocking the blood flow to the problematic tissue. This process shrinks the tissue and provides symptom relief.

The goal of UAE is to reduce blood flow to the affected areas of the uterus, causing the abnormal tissue to shrink and alleviating symptoms such as heavy bleeding and pelvic pain. Our team will walk you through the entire procedure from start to finish

The Recovery Timeline

Most patients can return home the same day after the UAE procedure, though a few hours of rest can be necessary. Cramping or pelvic pressure is common and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Activity is usually limited for a day or two, and patients may experience mild vaginal spotting or discharge as the uterus heals. Full symptom relief may take a few weeks to a couple of months as the abnormal tissue shrinks. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, though some may need up to a week to fully recover.
