Pelvic Congestion Syndrome Treatment

Pelvic pain is a common concern for women and is often caused by poor blood flow in the pelvic veins. Whether called pelvic venous insufficiency, ovarian vein reflux, or pelvic congestion syndrome, the underlying issue is the same: blood pooling and increased pressure in the veins. Structural issues like May-Thurner Syndrome can also cause pelvic and leg pain due to vein compression.

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome often causes a dull, aching pain that worsens over time—especially before or during intercourse, around menstruation, after long periods of standing, or at day’s end. Some may also notice enlarged veins on the buttocks, thighs, or genital area.

This condition accounts for 10–15% of referrals to gynecologists and pain clinics but remains underdiagnosed and often misunderstood.

Your Pelvic Pain Can Be Treated

At Vista, we will collaborate closely with your primary care provider and gynecologist to thoroughly review your medical history, symptoms, and imaging results.

With the help of advanced imaging techniques like CT or MRI, we gain a clear understanding of your condition and can determine the most effective treatment plan tailored to your needs. Pelvic pain is treatable, and we’ll provide the ideal options for your condition.

What Are Your Treatment Options?

The right treatment option is different for every woman. After your initial consultation, we will recommend one of the following procedures:

  • Embolization: Through the use of embolic materials, such as coils or injections, blood is stopped from refluxing through the veins.
  • Sclerotherapy: Veins that aren’t working properly are closed off, giving blood a new path through healthier veins.
  • Stent placement: A stent can be placed to relieve vein compression and restore normal blood flow to the arteries.

Every treatment we offer is minimally invasive and performed through a small incision made in the groin or neck. You won’t have to worry about losing your uterus or ovaries, and you’ll be able to go home the same day to begin your short recovery.

The Recovery Process

Once you return home, you can look forward to experiencing relief from pelvic pain. There can be some mild discomfort, such as pelvic pressure or cramping, but that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Activity is usually limited for a couple of days, and you may experience mild bruising or spotting. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, with significant symptom relief often occurring within a few weeks to a couple of months as the veins heal and the blood flow improves.
